Why Pool Fence Inspections Matter
In Queensland, drowning is the leading cause of accidental death for children under five. A correctly installed and maintained pool fence is the single most effective barrier between young children and the water. Queensland law requires all pool barriers to comply with the Building Act 1975 and Australian Standard AS1926, but many pool fences — even newer ones — fail to meet current requirements due to changes in the standard, wear and tear, or modifications made to the property over time.
A pool fence inspection by a QBCC licensed pool safety inspector gives you certainty that your barrier is compliant and that your family, guests, and neighbours' children are protected.
What Our Pool Fence Inspection Covers
Our inspection assesses every element of your pool barrier against Queensland's pool safety standard:
Pool Fence Structure & Height
- Minimum fence height of 1200mm measured from the finished ground level on the non-pool side
- Maximum gap between fence rails of 100mm (preventing foot holds for climbing)
- Maximum gap between fence and ground of 100mm
- Structural integrity — no loose, damaged, or missing panels
- Fence footings — stable and secure
Pool Gate & Latch
- Gate must be self-closing — must return to the fully closed position from any angle when released
- Gate must be self-latching — latch must engage automatically when the gate closes
- Latch must be on the pool side of the gate (or at least 1500mm above ground if on the outside)
- Gate must open away from the pool (outward-swinging) unless a compliant alternative is installed
- No gaps allowing a child to reach through and release the latch
Non-Climbable Zone (NCZ)
- A clear 900mm zone must exist on the outside of the pool fence, free of any climbable objects
- No furniture, pot plants, garden ornaments, metre boxes, or structures within this zone
- No horizontal rails, footholds, or decorative elements on the fence itself that aid climbing
House as Part of the Barrier
- Any wall, door, or window forming part of the pool barrier must be assessed
- Doors must be self-closing and self-latching, with an alarm or compliant latch at 1500mm+
- Windows within 300mm of the pool barrier must be non-openable beyond 100mm
Pool Signage
- A current CPR sign must be displayed at the pool in a clearly visible location
- The sign must comply with current Queensland requirements (updated guidelines apply)
After the Inspection
If your pool fence passes all requirements, we lodge the pool safety certificate with QBCC immediately. You receive your official certificate within 2–3 business days.
If any items do not comply, you receive a written Nonconformity Notice that clearly lists every issue found, the relevant standard it fails to meet, and practical guidance on how to rectify it. Most issues can be fixed by a competent handyman for well under $200. Once fixed, our $99 re-inspection gets you certified promptly.
